Screws and Dowels Calculator

Estimate the quantity, weight and cost of screws, dowels and nails for a woodworking project.

The Screws and Dowels Calculator helps carpenters, cabinet makers and hobbyists estimate how many fasteners to buy for a project by summing the joints, the count per joint and a loss margin.

Choose the fastener type (screw, dowel or nail), the most common size, the number of joints in the project and how many fasteners each joint uses. The tool applies a configurable loss margin, shows the total units, the estimated weight in grams or kilograms, suggests a pack multiple to buy and calculates the total cost if you provide a unit price.

Use the result to close your shopping list before heading to the hardware store. Combine this reading with a physical check of the project and the wood species, as denser woods may require larger screws or dowels.

Common sizes vary by type: screws 3.5x16 to 6.0x100 mm; dowels 6x30 to 12x60 mm; nails 1.2x15 to 4.0x70 mm.
