Room Lighting Calculator

Estimate total lumens and an approximate lamp count for living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, offices and other spaces.

Use this room lighting calculator to estimate how many lumens make sense before choosing ceiling lights, spotlights, pendants or replacement bulbs. It combines room size, ceiling height, room use and surface tone to suggest a more practical level of general lighting.

The result helps you move beyond guesswork when comparing 800, 1,100 or 1,600 lumen bulbs and also estimates how many similar fixtures you may need to spread light more evenly. That makes it useful for remodels as well as quick comfort upgrades.

Enter the room area, select the main use and add the ceiling height. If you already know the average lumen output of each bulb or fixture, the calculator also estimates how many units you would need to reach the suggested level.

The estimate starts from a room-type lux target, then adjusts for ceiling height and darker or lighter finishes.

How the estimate works

The calculator starts with a target illuminance level in lux based on the room type. It then multiplies that target by the room area in square metres, adjusts for ceiling height and applies a simple factor for light, neutral or dark surfaces. The final lumen figure is the suggested amount of general light for the space.

How to use the result

  • The lux target shows the general brightness level recommended for the main use of the room.
  • Total lumens represent the approximate combined output your fixtures should provide.
  • When you enter the lumen output of one bulb or fixture, the calculator estimates how many similar units would be needed to hit that target.

When task lighting still matters

Kitchens, mirrors, desks, reading corners and detailed work zones often need extra focused lighting on top of the ambient layer. Use this page as the general lighting baseline, then add task lights where precision and visual comfort matter most.
